Feeling Inspired

Seriously, almost three whole weeks without making a video, Charlie? Since the start of this year I’ve been doing my utmost to post a video every single week, there have been a few weeks where I’ve lapsed, but never three in a row like this. When you start getting emails from people asking if you’ve died, you know it’s been too long. When your FRIENDS start getting emails asking why I haven’t made a video, you really know it’s been too long. Still, technically I’ve just uploaded 12 new videos (including all of those that go into make an episode of Truth Or Fail) so I hope that makes up for it!

Some of you might recall this video from four months ago, which I made while I was actually in San Fransisco, in the middle of my visit to the Pixar studios. In the video, I talked about how I had interviewed Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3, in song -- the more observant among you will notice that the song didn’t make the final cut in the video. As the months passed, my ideas for the video changed a lot from what I had originally envisioned before going to Pixar, and when the time came to make the video, the song just didn’t quite fit with what I wanted to do.

However, if I can find the time then I might always upload the song, out of context, up here onto the website. That is if there’s an interest for it. Also, there’s a lot of extra footage that I got with Lee when I interviewed him (which happened just recently actually, I wanted some more footage to beef up my video and, seeing as he was in London promoting Toy Story 3, he managed to find some time for me) so I might upload a longer version of that interview up here too. Hopefully I’ll manage to find the time to put those videos together!

Thanks, as always, for your continued support. It seems silly for me to try and “make it!” in the world of television or whatever, not that I won’t consider those opportunities if they come along, but in the mean time I really want to direct my attention to what I love to do. I’ll do all I can to make the best videos I can, and I hope you’ll like them! :)

    I saw Toy Story 3 on Wednesday night, and was surprised to see the line for tickets so long when I arrived. The film was absolutely amazing though, and I soon realised why there was so many people there. The plot was extremely well built, with hilarious plot twists and original ideas. I must say I'm developing into quite the pixar fan-girl myself.

    On the other hand, I'm glad that you've been inspired to make new videos.

    Toy Story 3 was amazing. There's things that I don't think I'll ever be able to let go of from my childhood, and the Toy Story franchise is one of them.

    It's really fun to watch you seeing you with all the passion that you have for pixar and youtube, I love pixar to, I (literally) have been raised with pixar and disney, I'll support you with everthing you do ( sounds like a stalker or something like that, which I'm not ;) )

    It's amazing that you actually “worry” about making enough videos for “us” – I don't think you have to, since your videos are worth waiting for and we all know that you have a life. Even you have to do “normal” stuff, not only uploading videos on Youtube :D

    Your videos are something that you do for yourself and you are pround of them, so you dont have to make sure that we get our weekly fix! If you just dont feel like you would have a video that you would like to put on your channel; then dont. We only want to see you doing something that you really enjoy.     Ooh, I'd love to see more of that Lee Unkrich interview– I met him briefly at the Irish premiere of Toy Story 3 and he was wonderful. Just talking to him for those few minutes was unbelievably inspiring; can't imagine what a full blown conversation must've been like.

    Also, the reason Toy Story characters blink once at a time is to give the animation more asymmetry in the action– it's just to make the shot more organic and interesting, really :)

    I have to say, you are one of the luckiest people on earth in my eyes. I absolutely positively adore Pixar and everything they've done since Toy Story (and I was only 2 then, but I loved that movie so much. I've made it my goal in life to collect as much Pixar memorabilia as possible, haha.) to now, Toy Story 3. After 11 movies and 15 years, that company is still as stellar as ever, their films are impeccable, and their ability to create magic is absolutely incredible.

    While I would have loved to have your opportunity, I'm glad to see that you found inspiration in company as great as Pixar, and that you seem to have realized some more things about yourself that you may not have known before. :) You're lucky to have met Lee Unkrich, and I wish I could have had the same opportunity. Even though I am not that great at art, it's my dream to find a job in Pixar Studios, or at least get the same opportunity as you to explore the offices because it's just so dang cool. :) See, these kind of things make me wish I knew you in real life–my friends don't have the same feelings towards the Pixar movies as I do, but they'll come along if I drag them to the theaters (which I do and have done. I was planning our midnight showing of Toy Story 3 since I found out the release date was at the end of my school year (which I believe was sometime in January. 8D;;)

    Hearing that you are interested in the comments to your videos I feel encouraged to leave a comment here for you. I've been watching your videos for quite some time and I have to say that there certainly is a trend towards the good. Your videos do get better, mainly your editing work, which is reaching the level of awesome – according to my standards, at least :) Your attitude towards what you do shines through your videos and that may be one reason why people enjoy watching them so much.
    I kind of feel like sharing these thoughts with you now, because a few days ago I found myself explaining it to my sister why I watch your videos. Actually, I tried to list more reasons, but I just don't think I could grab the essence of my motivation – maybe because I left out your motivation to make good videos, which is definitely appealing to me. OK, that's enough of my train of thought :)
    Oh, just one more thing, a personal kind of remark: I think that if you are able to reflect on your own choices like this, you can’t be a kid anymore. :)

    Just like YouTube, a fairly young company and media pioneer, you are groping along through this evolving digital age, seeking how to best fit in. I think you're doing a fine job of it, taking risks here & there, but pulling back when when they prove too dangerous. The fact that you've found a formula for earning a living by essentially being yourself is a fantastic achievement and should not be discarded lightly, no matter how tempting the alternatives may seem. I'm afraid the course that Justin Bieber has taken–of essentially selling his soul to others in search of massive profits–will end badly, both for himself and his fans. (Although I'm not religious, I think a certain Bible verse sums the matter up quite nicely–”For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”) I think the Charlie McDonnell course is best.

    Hey Charlie, it's so good to know that great vids are to come, most of us are really happy for you! I wanted to recommend you a book: The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren (a lot better that Twilight, don't worry). I read it early this year and now I'm re-reading it because it's that good. It's a journey where you'll focus your energy on what matters most, change perspectives, and answer those longing questions within all of us. Find it in any store where books are sold.

    You’ve mentioned several times that you’re kind of awkward and quiet in person, and I’ve always accepted that as truth, because why would you lie about that? However, I could never really imagine it because you’re so effusive and charming in your videos. The interview, however, illustrated that you are, in fact, kind of awkward and shy. I think that’s really nice; it makes you seem more like a person that could actually exist, and not a Charliebot. On the whole, I thought this video was really, really sweet and it’s nice to know that YOU know exactly what it is you want to do and what is right for you to devote yourself to. I haven’t reached that point in my life, yet, even though I’m about your age, and can’t wait until I catch up with you in that aspect.

    i actually almost went to the pixar studio back in 2006 because my family was in Disneyland. we never ended up going because my mom really loves Snoopy so we went to Knotts barry farm instead to see Snoopyland. i don’t know if i missed out on anything though because Snoopyland actually was fairly cool.
