Hah! That’s a brilliant bit of information, and kind makes me want to use the SOA abbreviation even more.

I mean, it would make sense for them to form a band so that they could provide the background music for their solo projects. That much makes sense, so I would fathom that the band is real. It’s a little late for April Fool’s, though, but these guys aren’t the kind of people who would withhold credit from Cat Stevens. :)

After the starting bit it sounds quite close, except with no glockenspiel (this effect is substituted with synth), tambourine, or Cat Stevens-esque vocals. English band the Tremeloes also covered the song, but with a more Beatles/Monkees-esque rendition.

Yeah I do agree that the band makes sense, i was just really surprised they didn’t give credit where it was due. And thanks for the music info, I know next to nothing about it!

I really like the music video, nice twist there at the end with the other girl.
The song is also very awesome! It's just great hearing your voices together, they're so different but somehow they combine great.
One little thing though, I find that…dunno, ripping/tearing sound quite annoying. It's to loud or strong or whatever. Gives me the feeling like I have to listen to thát instead of the lyrics itself.

you directed really well here :) very impressed! It's very engaging. I wish I could give some more feedback, but I'm not too learned in the art of cinematography. The colour was great, very bright and worked well with the song. I liked how you explored angles and frames in this video – it really paid off, made it really enjoyable to watch – especially with Alex holding the frame :)

I think the concept of the music video was a little bit confusing with the lyrics of the song. I like the story the song tells, though I do know how it feels to be in the situation depicted in the song, and the tune of the song is definitely not matching with that feeling. That said, I did like the song, it's catchy and seems like the kind of thing people will sing along to. I also liked the picture frame thing at the beginning in Alex's section, but that does not get carried on, and the lighting is not terribly good at that part either, I know how difficult it is to film at night without professional lighting, but your gain may have been up a bit too high as well making it slightly grainy there. You should get some reflectors, you can make one using foam board and covering it in something reflective, like foil, if you can get it to stay straight. They're good for catching light from street lamps or whatever and directing it where you want it to go. Nice video though and really nice resolution as well from the camera. …. That was a really long and weird post, sorry.

Great first song! And a very hilarious ending to the video – I've always wondered what people said when they pretend to talk.

Its was a very cute and interesting video. I loved the concept and the ending. It has a bit of a Weezer feel to the video but with a different spin. Good job directing. The song itself was fantastic and I loved that everyone participated in the singing and got a bit of story to go on in it.

I'll admit, I'm not too keen on the song choice and how you've covered it.
As an introduction to your new band I don't think going out with a cover that's already been done multiple times by all different artists is a good way to promote yourselves. Personally, the whole cover thing gives of a very amateur vibe to me. Not that I mean to sound harsh, it's just personal opinion. (something I hope you'll appreciate more than “OMG I love you, wicked vid. you're gorgeous.” I could say that, I wouldn't be lying but I'd much rather give you some honest feedback.)
I do think your editing and directing skills are exceptional. I liked the storyline as well.
Despite what I said previously, I am keen on seeing what else you have in store, since I think it's just too soon to make up my mind after just one song.

Way to revive a really catchy song. You guys were fantastic! For the most part the video was easy to follow though there was maybe one or two parts where I was a tad confused (but that may be because I haven't had my morning coffee yet :P).

Question: Where did you get the idea to do this piece? Don't get me wrong, it's brilliant, I'm just curious to know if all of a sudden the concept just might of “popped” right into your head.

I liked the concept of the video. Considering the budget and equipment you had, I think it is well done. If it was possible I would have used some more slow motion and made it more dramatic, definately in the 'argument' scene. It could use some focus changes and the background setting might be better if it was 'visually simplified' (less trees,houses, street,… in one background). I liked the color-switching. I thought the music sounded too 'flat' at times (I'm not familiar with the correct terminology.). I'm guessing it's the electronics used in it. I'd prefer more instrumental music, but that might just be a matter of taste. Sorry about the bad English, I'm Dutch :) Good luck on the project! I think it's a good start.

Though I will be really itching for some new TROCK stuff when the season of Doctor Who is over and done with, which I am very very sad about by the way.

I admire what you guys are trying to do – breaking traditional conventions of a band and trying out new models – and the editing looks clean and flawless, but I too had issues with the song choice as well as the narrative in the video. On one hand, you're trying new things; on the other, the subject matter is … I don't want to say overdone, but it is staying firmly within 'what works', and frankly I found the narrative to be sexist and slightly misogynistic. I know, I know, it's just supposed to be funny, but it left a bad taste in my mouth that (assuming I understood it correctly) the girls were shown as incapable of being loyal, as well as being shallow and bitchy while the guys 'rose above' the pettiness and walked away.

I kind of feel like Cat Stevens should have been more clearly cited, but I like SOA's version better anyway! Great job!

I am really excited about this. :D Both the song and the video is simply amazing, and there is no doubt that there is a lot of talent behind this. Great initiative! :D

I enjoy the video. I like how you can actually follow the story without really needing props from the music (though the music helps it along).
I also really like the timing of pans, and how it isn't all straight cuts.
The angles are also really unique, but all work and are all rather light hearted. That sentence makes more sense to me, but that's alright. The angles are also really professional for an amateur.
The only tiny constructive criticism I have is that during the night scenes at the beginning, you could make a reflector out of the two sides of tin foil (attach it to cardboard), and using the dull side, you reflect a little more light on to Alex Day's face; it'll help in bringing more focus to it (also, using it whenever you have a close up of anyone. Helps to dispel weird shadows too!).
By no means am I a professional director anything, and I'm solely commenting from one aspiring director to another. But yeah, great job!

The bad lighting at the start was a budget (I.E. We had none) and timing thing more than anything, we just did the best with what we could find. We definitely saved it with colouring though – it originally looked a LOT darker :P

Ed should dye his hair purple and Alex should dye his green… That would round things out nicely…

I'm a massive Cat Stevens fan (see Harold and Maude… NAO), so I love it that you guys covered it. I'm glad you took out the horns that the original song had and put your own spin on it. You really modernized it and it sounds like something that I could hear on the radio today.

As for the video, it is cute narrative. It's easy to follow, and that's integral to a good piece of film. It's a little simplistic, but that's okay because it fits the song really well. The bit in the street is a bit too dark for me to see what was going on, though. Maybe you could have put them under a street lamp? Of course, natural lighting at night is… uh… hard to come by, and maybe you wanted it to be really dark like that to match the opening lyrics. If that's the case, don't listen to me. Overall, I feel like you've already improved in directing. 'S good. Keep going!

Anyway, I am really giddy about this. Hope to hear more from you guys, because I love what I've seen so far.

Liked it! Watched the video sitting in starbucks with my iPhone early this morning and bought the song through iTunes after 3 watches. I don't normally buy so easily. I'm glad I watched the video first as it adds a really great story layer that you cant get with the track alone. Its a poppy track, which some might not like, but its totally stuck in my head right now, and I dont argue against things that get stuck in my head. I also enjoyed looking out the window and watching cute girls cross the street while I was listening. Helped pull me even further into the song. Here comes my baby??? No, they just kept walking. The video is AMAZING charlie! The light is really good throughout, apart from where Alex is singing where it's a bit too dark in places. The colours are brillant though, really bright and professional. Just thought I'd say, I love Eddplant's voice. It's really cool.

To be honnest, at the beginning i found some parts of the video looked a bit too “act”, but now i watch it again it looks better. :)) Otherwise, the montage and the special effects are great especially with the pictures at the beginning (how you do that?), and at 2.30 when Tom has a flashback. You've done well in forming a 'band of boys' without seeming like a 'boyband' (not that I could see you sitting on high stools and doing westlife style 'dancing', however, come to think of it, that would be pretty hilarious).

The video looks the most professional yet and was a really nice narrative. Particuarly liked Alex's 'how you doin' face when he 'got the girl', and I'm looking forward to seeing what other songs you tackle :)

considering how much work you and your friends put into this song & vid I feel bad saying that I don't actually like the song :( The topic & music are way too cheesy for me…The melody is kinda catchy, maybe I just miss that funny wittiness I love in your songs.

Can I be honest and say, even though I think he's an incredible person, Alex Day is an average singer at best.

Since you’re explicitly asking to hear our thoughts, I’m going to comment. But beware, I’ll be honest.

I think the directing and editing was very good (though not as impressive as “The Time Of Your Life”, which was outstanding, but the robot girl thing offered more possibilities than this rather ordinary, straightforward video). The introduction of the band in the beginning works really well, some parts of the night shots are a bit dark (I know you responded to that already, I just brought it up, because I know from experience how hard it is to get some proper lighting for a night shot, and wanted to add that you used the light that was there quite well), the scene with the photograph is a great idea and beautifully done, and the flashbacks with the faded colour look pretty good, too.

It was a good idea that you didn’t try to go for a romantic video with longing glances etc., but that you kind of embraced the awkwardness and exaggerated it a bit, so that it’s really fun to watch. At first it seemed odd that there’s no chemistry at all between the guys and the girls (even though both girls’ flirty acting was good), but at 2:42, at the latest, I was convinced that this was actually what you were going for. That gesture was just plain funny. XD

The song was … something I didn’t expect. First of all, it took me by surprise that it’s a cover version (I know you don’t like to call it that, but I don’t know how else I should put it). And frankly, I don’t like the song, but that’s just my personal opinion. Hence, I don’t quite see why you’d choose this particular song, but I’d be interested in the reasoning. After your truly clever and witty Chameleon Circuit songs (and also your clever and witty Charlie songs), the lyrics of this cover are just unbelievably shallow and boring in comparison.

I’ve just read through what I’ve written up till here, and I think it sounds like a lot of critique and like I’m thoroughly disappointed, so I thought I’d point out that I’m not. (And even if I was – just a tiny little bit, mind you! – bear in mind that you’ve raised the bar so high with your previous excellent work!) And I’m not gonna judge the Sons Of Admirals by this song, I’m very much looking forward to hearing some original material!
Still, I’m glad to hear that you won’t give up Chameleon Circuit, ’cause I can hardly wait to hear that song about not drinking water on Mars. :D

I hope you (or anyone else who took part in the making of this song and video, which I know was a lot of work) are not offended by anything I’ve written, and I wouldn’t have given my opinion if you hadn’t asked for it. But getting only “great, I love it”-comments isn’t exactly helpful, either, is it?

I love this video, it was really cute! Not sure if “cute” is the word you're going for, but what I mean is, it was a fun concept for a video. You all sound great together, and it makes me curious to hear/see more of your guys' work! There's definitely lots of potential here, you can go a lot of ways with the music. That was really cute! The song was so nice, but i feel like it should have been longer or something. It was really catchy, though. I also really love that there's no lead vocal, lead guitar, lead bagpipe or xylophone or whatever…from what i understand of your description, you all kind mostly do everything? (obviously not EVERYone does EVERYthing, but you work as a unit-ish-type-thing?) Either way, i really enjoyed that all of the guys sang the song. As for the video, it was really nice how the story kind of came full circle, but if the song was a wee bit longer, there might have been more time to establish more of a history in the relationships between the characters.

So my previous posts were sort of an instant reaction, and I honestly was just saying, “meh,” but….

The more I mull this video/song over (and the more time it spends in my Subscriptions box, which means I have to watch it a couple more times to rid my boredom), the more and more I like it. I will pretty much echo Hierholzer's thoughts, and say that it's obvious that you all enjoy working together and making great music–and that's what matters most.

People were commenting on some technical aspects, like color, transitions, and lighting, and I must say: these guys don't have the budget of Lady Gaga to produce videos, and if you take that into consideration along with the fact that no professionals were involved, I think you must give Charlie and anyone else who helped make this video a pat on the back.

Thing is what I love most about it is probably not necessarily what you'd want to hear or maybe not your usual “compliment” in a way.

What I love about it, and what made me enjoy this immeasurably and smile all the way through is mainly due to how all 4 of you are really awkward, super geeky aaaand not the best of actors, but very genuine, all of you exceedingly talented and funny which makes you all very, very loveable and this video incredibly enjoyable. so…, awkward and geeky but in a very good way (if that makes any sense to you) O_o”
Also the song is super catchy – I've watched it only once and I've already got the chorus stuck in my head – which is defo a big plus. :)

compliments on the editing and quality of the whole thing! here and there it's maybe a bit rough on the edges but in general extremely good work for an amateur production. And I love the idea – the 'storyline' – it works very well with the song (duh… >.>)

i thought it was brilliant for your first legit music video! i loved how everyone intertwined with one another just going back and forth. a band that actually uses all of its musicians voices on a single track how incredibly amazing is that! i loved that everyone was able to showcase their own talent and it wasn't simply one dominant voice, everyone was incorporated and had equal “camera time”. i loved it charlie, i see big things for this band, keep up the amazing work!!

great song, but a bit strange. would have loved to see more of you in it, and i think that the guy with blue hair is a little weird. I think you should do a really powerful song, with amazing lyrics that really speak to people. It doesnt haver to be fast, and it would expand your fan base. Hope I won't come off as too pompous, or too rude for that matter, but the video seems to be a tad… literal? Don't get me wrong, I love your videos in general, and this one's no different in technical terms. It's scene after scene of pleasant angles and lighting, as well as being solidly edited, but the actual content seems almost too simple. I can understand the desire to tell the narrative of the song through the video, but to do so doesn't quite credit the viewer’s intelligence. Maybe I'm asking too much, but a music video could, and should, be more than just a visual aid to the song – the best music videos could stand alone as pieces of art. A song only appeals to one of your five senses, so why not overwhelm and enshroud another in wonder, awe or perhaps even disorientation. Look at, say, the video for 'Rabbit in Your Headlight' by UNKLE, or 'Atmosphere' by Joy Division. Both are filled with imagery that, at first glance, might seem pretentious, affected or just downright nonsensical. With many viewings and a lot of patience, however, you peel back the layers of symbolism. It’s like a rewarding challenge for the audience, and one that, once they’ve solved it, they’ll be glad they to the time to do, finally realising that the mass of spoon-fed visuals in most music videos on closer inspection yield… wait for it… nothing! As a director, I know you’re limited by budgets and other inescapable evils. I’m only commenting like this as I realise you just want to make better videos. From reading the other comments, it seems like most people think you’re well, and I agree with them wholeheartedly. Maybe next time, just shake it up a little. Just promise me you won’t do a Lady Gaga.

Also, very cheeky – steal a classic Cat Stevens classic, then throw a beat at it and hope it sticks. You’ve all got good voices by the way, especially the one that’s not you, Alex or the lad with blue hair.

Incredible! I didn't know what to expect when I started watching the video, but this song is definitely something uniquely spectacular. Every member brought something great to the mix; I wasn't familiar with Eddplant pre-song, but found out soon his voice is of equivocal amazingness to his name. Also, song aside, the video was brilliant.

man, I had the wierdest dream about SOA and me and Big Brother. Basically we were all on BB-I don't even like the programme! That was the extent of the dream, clearly reassuring me that my decision to like SOA was the right one :)

Hmmm, while I do agree with others that your song was catchy and whatnot, I do have some pointers to say about the video. I think it was a little bit to slow, the editing pace could have been a lot faster and I think you could have used faster cuts to tell more of a story between the two girls and the group of friends. GREAT use of sun-flare in the beginning, I am seriously addicted to sun-flare. The opening shot of the guy with blue hair talking confused me, I thought there was something wrong with the audio until I realized it was just an establishing shot. I think the lighting could have been better for the night shots, yes it was dramatic, but hard to see. And it looked a little grainy, with lighting it would have been smoothed out.
All in all, a very enjoyable music video, but not at the professional level yet. It is obvious that it was pretty much no budget, and is to choppy (both shooting and editing) to have that effortless look that the experts have. Keep going and you'll get there!

Love the idea and very catchy :) Not really a professional video but a nice one- i like the song better with the accompanying video because it explains it. I love it when blue-hair-guy (I think it's Tom Milsom?) starts to sing it's a really sweet part that rounds up the song and leads to its conclusion. I love love love the bit where Alex comes up behind you and puts his hand on your shoulder and you shrug and smile and then all four of you walk off as friends. It makes me feel all warm and content with the end :)

Wow, I definitely want to hear more of this. This song is going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day, but since it's a great song I don't really mind. As someone pointed out before me, SOA is Dutch for STD, and I'm Dutch, so I guess that I won't use that abbreviation a lot. But I can just say Sons of Admirals instead of SOA and then it'll be fine.

I've been watching/listening to all four of you for quite some time, and honestly, it's sub-par from anything I'd expect from you individually. It's difficult to achieve something good when everyone is the lead. I didn't feel that you brought anything new to the song–just a more polished version of The Tremeloes cover but with less spirit and enthusiasm. I still enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to what you guys come up with in the future. I love all you guys, and I'm just trying to give some constructive criticism. I think you tried to balance so much (editing, story, music, vocals) that it just came out bland and average.

In all fairness, some people can eat a heap load of food but still turn out really skinny. That was the case of a friend of mine but now all that… eating… has caught up with her, on saying that she’s still far from fat, but not as stick thin as she used to be either, which is awesome. Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is, rather than how much a person eats, their weight is probably more affected by what kinds of foods they eat, and what kinds of fat etc are in those foods.

And yes, I’m also a “jealous” fan. Jealous of these guys’ talents anyway… *sigh*

Implicitlydandy, dont get me wrong. Im big fan of Charlie. He is my favorite youtuber. But im not gonna be dishonest. He is very handsome, but also quite unfit. He has said it himself several times. As british say – healthy mind in healthy body (in Charlie's case also good teeth, which is very unbritish :)). His vlogs are brilliant, but i believe physical fitness would give him ability to improve and diversify his vlogs even further. Just think about it. Fit and muscly Charlie, with all of his brilliant and irresistible charlieness. I think universe would explode. Well, figuratively speaking :). Its like a missing element, a last component what is needed to become an avatar (cartoon, not avatar movie :)) in showbiz. Well, atleast youtube. Yes, i know i have vivid fantasy. I definately like the song. I've never heard the original version, but I thought you guys did quite splendidly. However, it has been stuck in my head for the past few days, I keep finding myself singing it randomly. I've gotten a few odd looks in my Biology class because of it.

And the video looks more professional than your usual videos.
But I do like the fact that while it's more professional than your usual videos, it's also still amateurish, so it feels more authentic…there's more heart to it.

I'm definately looking forward to the next song you guys come out with.

I already challenged him to get fit quite a few times. Check my comment belove in this blog comments, i made it few days ago. It has 28 likes right now :). Go vote it up. Its best and healthiest challenge for Charlie so far i think :). I mean, eating ketchup and fish custard? Lets stop these animal testing challenges and come up with ones that actually benefit Charlie.

This music video and this challenge idea are directly linked. In his vlogs we usually see only his angelic face, but this time we saw his full body (''omg Charlie has legs'' – that was someone's comment, i liked :)). He has nice body, good bonestructure (anatomy lessons flashbacks ftw :)), but clearly no visible signs of exercising. Yes, people should accept and love people the way they are, but they also shouldnt be afraid to criticize or give advice if its needed. I get suggestions from friends and familymembers all the time. Sometimes i dont like it, but i know their intentions are good. Im trying to be positive here. I just want what is best for Charlie (or every person in fact) – good physical shape. Exercising is good for your health, dont you agree? Yes, i want to see fitter Charlie. I dont see nothing wrong about that wish.

Attracting flocks of females is only byproduct. Fitness gives to person self-confidence and raises his self-esteem. One of my friend who was overweight found his way to gym and is now completely different person. He was very self-critical, but now he is comfortable with himself. Im not saying its so in Charlie's case, however i believe this example generally applies to everyone. I think getting fit would be very positive for him. How would it diversify and improve his vlogs? I dont know, use your imagination. More physical comedy sketches, exercising videos, dance routines (''hips dont lie'' cover :)), advertising swim shorts, appearing in playgirl? There are literally countless possibilities. Also read my reply to caturday's comment.

Since when are comments about a video suppose to be criticising someone's physical appearance? Personally I am scared of muscular people and Charlie you have a very good body. And by the way people, he's not unfit. There is a big difference between being freakishly muscular and being toned. But since this is a response to a video I believe that is all on that matter.

For some reason, I feel the need to tell you that I had this amazing dream that you and I were in California (same place, same exact time, miraculously) and you gave me flowers, a Cinderella bracelet, and a pin that said “I cuddled with Charlie.” But it wasn't until you gave me the pin that I realized it was actually you, and then you kind of freaked out that I had figured out you were practically famous. After that, things just got weird… it was like all of a sudden it mixed with the little mermaid and you were the prince and I was Ariel and then Ursula tried to kill us both. I got the song just to support your collaboration. It is very catchy and the video is fun and campy in a way. Back to the song, I wasn't to keen on the heavy sounding beat that's used in the beginning and throughout but the overall song is just to catchy to allow that minor quibble bring it down. Good work.

I think the song is amazing – and well done on getting this far in the music industry! But I think the only problem is that the song if downloaded music only (IE no video) the song would be less fun and less understandable. But however still enjoyable – but maybe less so.

Charlie, thought the music video was great! The song is pretty sweet too. The only complaint that I have is that your background percussion sounds like it's getting distorted on my laptop speakers, but I plugged it into my stereo afterward to see if that was intended and not just a hardware shortcoming and it turns out it was just a stylistic choice. It's good, but can be confusing for those not expecting it :P You all have great voices and are a good-looking band as well!

Charlie, I'm sorry, but the video sucks. The message it sends is “Bros before hos” essentially, and reduces women to completely irrelevant beings, because it takes the guys about five seconds to realize they're arguing over something completely irrelevant. Are women irrelevant in your world? That's the message this video sends, and that sucks.

How would that reduce women to being completely irrelevant beings?
Yes, it does have the whole 'bros before hoes' mentality.
But I don't get how that would lead you to come to your conclusion.

Irrelevant, because ultimately the girls are not important for the boys' relationship. They can just walk away from them, as if nothing happened, while the girls are left arguing. So girls think boys are relevant enough to argue over, but boys don't feel the same about girls. They smile at each other sheepishly (oh, gosh, how silly of us to argue over such an insignificant thing), shake hands and walk away.

I think that you forgot the fact that both these girls appeared to be cheating on the guys who loved them, and the guys decided that, instead of fighting amongst themselves about which guy deserved which girl, they realized that their friendship was worth more than a couple of unfaithful girls.

At least, that's what I got from it :] Loved the work, guys!

Its quite hard to finish a relationship politically correct manner if song lasts only 3 min. The lyrics of the song and band setup pretty much dictated this 'bros before hos plot'. Charlie can be quite naughty sometimes. So maybe he gave intentionally this a bit gayish bros before hos innuendo to his video. Also to be objective here, im confident that lots of guys (i dont know about Alex, Ed and Tom) would prefer Charlie over those girls. I mean Charlie is too pretty to be a guy :).

Anyway I have to say, you sound so 80s with your woman rights rhetoric. Are women irrelevant in his world? If you were in his shoes and you had thousands of druling fanboys chasing after you, wouldnt it impact your opinion on opposite sex? Probably not in a positive way. Its a sad reality. Actually its a very interesting question, but for different reason ;). Although Charlie has repeatedly stated that he is completely and utterly straight, he has not had a true girlfriend. Great Cover of Here Comes My Baby by Tremeloes I loved that you guys each shared the lead vocals and sang part of lyrics of the song! It gives the song a whole new dimension and vocal quality that's great! I was hoping you, Alex, Tom, and Ed would come together on song and use your musical talents which I think turned out great! The bright pop sound also adds to it also, which sounds better than the original. It reminds me of the theme song to Skins which has a bright melody to it too! Great Vocals & Great Video!

Hi Im making a documentary on redheads… Somehow during this rather exciting but tediously time consuming project i managed to drive myself insane by listening to strange youtube videos unfortunately a short time after the completion of the documentary i found this… and consequently i died. You see i missed out on listening to this while editing. If i had known about it i would have had many fun-filled hours killing myself laughing during cutting in and out of scenes…

I don't know about the video, i'm not sure if you're looking only for complements but I do think that some constructive critique may actually help you in the next video.
I really think you have talent, thou your video clips (when you direct the music videos) haven't really came out as I hoped to. You can edit a lot better, but that is not the problem. The problem is that the story wich you base the videos on is far too literal, I mean, why do you need to do such explicit subjects? you don't let the space to expand your orizons, at least in esthetics and in imagination. Well, don't know if you get me, I'm trying to do an effort with my english, so, nothing :) be creative!!! still a huge fan of yours!

Amazing! This is great. I really love your voice and your videos! I've always been interested in making music videos and starting a band. I haven't done either yet (then again I suck at writing songs. Lmao). There's a band from New York called The Drums that plays in The UK a lot that you ought to check out. Sons of Admirals sounds a bit similar to them. I think you might enjoy them.

I am without a doubt going to buy this song, I find it alot better than the original, although far be it for me to discount Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam.
